Why a Mural?
Murals are one of the oldest art forms in the world... it is human nature to surround ourselves with art. Although we may never know exactly why early man first put pigment on the walls of caves, the lasting importance of the images created cannot be understated. Those early cave paintings were the first signs of an innate predisposition that has blossomed into a tool for defining cultures, conveying emotions and beliefs. With the development of our modern societies and modern thoughts came the evolution of art. Primitive pigments kept pace with new innovations in science which heralded new movements in art. With the advent of tempura paints came beautiful gold gilded paintings in the gothic era, the discovery of oil paints opened the doors for the masterpieces of Da Vinci, Caravaggio, and Titian to name a few. At each step murals played an important role in peoples lives. Whether in homes in Pompeii or on the ceiling of Sistine Chapel few art forms have spanned such a wide range of applications and motivations for their creation.
Why do I paint?
I painted my first mural for a friend. It was something that I thought would be fun to do. Although I had an idea of how neat the finished product would be, I was pretty amazed at the reaction I got from it. My friend LOVED it... her kids LOVED it... everyone LOVED it! I was blown away! The reaction I got was what drove me to start my business and it's still what drives me. Each mural I create is painted with one thing in mind... getting that reaction from you! I can't express enough how fun it is to come into someone's home, to put your heart into the mural that you're creating just for them, and know that you've left them totally satisfied and ecstatic about their new addition. It's really easy to enjoy the work you do when the end product is an ecstatic client.
Painting murals is also always new and different. There are always new challenges, new concepts, and new techniques to tackle and master. Each job has its own personality which means I'm always having to learn new things, and paint in different ways. One mural may be very dark and dramatic, while another is light with soft subtle tones. Developing a mural that fits your styles and aesthetic is the challenge that keeps my job interesting, because in the end I'm not painting for me, I'm painting for YOU!
What is Trompe l'oeil?
Trompe l'oeil is French for "trick of the eye" which means that a trompe l'oeil mural is a painting that looks like something it is not. It is a realistic style which is the most technically difficult types of murals to paint… and my favorite. It takes an understanding of vanishing points, sights lines, and shadow casting to make a trompe l'oeil mural believable. Thankfully for me (and for you) I used to create perspective drawings for contractors of things like decks, patio covers, and new homes, which was great practice for creating realistic trompe l'oeil murals. What good is a mural of a window looking out onto a tropical beach if you don't have the sense that any minute a warm ocean breeze will carry the soft smell of plumerias and sea foam up from the sand and into your home?
Welcome to my site!
My hope for this website is to share with people the joys of murals and decorative painting and to shed some light on the techniques and processes of the trade.
To your right are a few BEFORE and AFTER pictures of some of my past projects.
Enjoy!
